Kai Kristiansen, Sideboard Model 394 for Aksel Kjersgaard

A fine example of Danish modernism, the 394 sideboard combines all the hallmarks of Scandinavian design: functionality, sobriety, solidity and respect of materials.

The sideboard opens by four drawers with recessed handles, characteristic of the furniture developed by Kai Kristiansen and Aksel Kjersgaard. The collection resulting from their collaboration was produced from 1955 to the mid-1960s in Odder, Denmark. The beauty of the veneer, combined with perfectly executed joinery, testifies to the excellence hidden in the apparent simplicity and purity of the lines. This is what makes the 394 a sought-after piece by Scandinavian design enthusiasts.

The piece shown here has a slight discolouration on the top left-hand drawer, probably due to sunlight exposure. Traces of use, very good overall condition.

    Stamped at the back.

Aksel Kjersgaard A/S was founded in 1952 in Odder by master carpenter Aksel Kjersgaard. After working for more than three years as an itinerant craftsman, he wanted to try out his own ideas. In 1955, production of chests of drawers, mirrors and small furniture began in collaboration with architect Kai Kristiansen.

Each piece is carefully cleaned and, when necessary, restored with respect for its original conception.
Subtle signs of use and natural patina may remain, as part of its lived history.
