Amedeo Modigliani (after), Woman head in terracotta by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais

This terracotta reproduction of a woman’s head, created and commercialized by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais around 2010, is based on a sculpture by the renowned artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Key figure of the vibrant Parisian art scene around 1910, Amedeo Modigliani aimed to develop a new sculptural language influenced by African, Greek, and ancient Egyptian art.

According to his close friend Jacob Epstein, Modigliani would place candles on these heads at night, embracing the totemic and luminous sculptures while under the influence of marijuana. He envisioned these heads as part of “columns of tenderness” within an unrealized “temple of beauty.”

The head’s shape is notably inspired by African masks from tribes in Gabon, Angola, and the Republic of Congo, particularly the Ngil Fang masks. These masks are characterized by elongated faces with high orbital cavities, a long straight nose, and fine eye incisions.
