Description

Donald Gordon, Rocking Chair in Kauri and Oak – New Zealand Studio Craft, 2004

Made in 2004 by New Zealand furniture maker Donald Gordon, this handcrafted rocking chair is a striking example of contemporary studio craft. Combining native kauri and solid oak, the chair reveals a refined sensibility—where sculptural form and functional design are held in quiet balance.

Little is known about Gordon’s output; mentions of his work appear only sporadically in local sources, with brief reference to a small studio focused on rocking chairs. This scarcity adds to the appeal of the piece, which offers not just aesthetic merit, but rarity and a strong sense of place.

The chair’s gently flowing lines, carefully carved backrest, and the fluid joinery between the two contrasting woods speak to an experienced hand. There’s a clarity to the form, restrained yet expressive, that recalls the American studio movement—particularly the work of Sam Maloof, whose influence seems to echo here in both spirit and construction.

Lightly patinated with age, the chair shows minor fading and wear consistent with careful use. It is signed and dated by the maker beneath the seat. Very good condition overall.
